Short answer: October to February. Comfortable temperatures, the reservoir still full from the monsoon, and the water level dropping enough for the islands to appear.
The longer answer is that Banswara looks like a different place in each season, and depending on what you came for, the obvious choice is not always yours.
Winter — October to February ★
The best time, for almost everyone.
Daytime temperatures are pleasant and mornings are genuinely cold by Rajasthan standards. This is when Chacha Kota gives you the hundred islands view properly: the water has dropped, the islands stand clear, and the low winter light separates land from water.
It is also the only season when a hill climb — Madareshwar, the Sai Baba temple, Kushalgarh Fort — is a pleasure rather than an ordeal.
Bring something warm for early mornings. People are always surprised by that.
Summer — March to June ✕
Avoid if you can. April to June regularly passes 40°C, and by May the outlying sites are dusty, shadeless and unpleasant.
If you are here on business and have a free hour, restrict yourself to early morning. Kagdi Weir at 7 AM is fine. Chacha Kota at 2 PM in May is a mistake.
The one advantage: everywhere is empty.
Monsoon — July to September ◐
Divisive, and interesting.
The rain greens the whole district, the reservoir fills, and Jua Waterfall actually runs — it is dry for most of the year, so if a monsoon waterfall is what you want, this is the only window.
The costs are real. Approach roads to outlying sites get difficult. Rocks near water are dangerously slippery. Water levels rise without warning. And the islands are underwater, so the thing Banswara is famous for is not visible at all.
Come in the monsoon for green country and waterfalls. Do not come in the monsoon for the islands.
Festival timing
Two things worth planning around, in either direction:
- Navratri — Tripura Sundari is extraordinary and extremely crowded. Come for the atmosphere, or deliberately avoid it for a quiet darshan.
- Mahashivratri — the same applies to Madareshwar.
Local fairs at Ghotia Amba and the annual urs at Abdulla Pir also draw large crowds. Both follow calendars that move each year, so ask us when you book rather than assuming last year’s dates.
